Blackburn Rovers V Preston North End Ewood Friday 10th November 7.45 KO Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End meet on Friday for the first time in the Championship this season, having had contrasting fortunes. Ryan Lowe's Lilywhites raced out of the blocks, topping the table having been unbeaten after seven games. Rovers have had an up and down campaign but welcome North End off the back of four wins from five league fixtures. With Preston slipping to sixth after losing momentum, and four places separating the sides, there's a lot at stake in this Lancashire derby. Preston's start to the season was impressive as they mounted their best start to a campaign since 1903. Having drawn against Bristol City on the opening day, Ryan Lowe put together a remarkable run of six consecutive victories, culminating in their fine display against Birmingham City on 19 September. Lowe's side were forced to mount a comeback on that Tuesday evening at Deepdale, with Krystian Bielik putting the ball into his own net and Milutin Osmajic completing the turnaround to put them top of the Championship. But in eight games since then Preston have won just once and slipped from top spot down to sixth in the table, way off pacesetting leaders Leicester and Ipswich. "They're [Blackburn] a good team, everyone knows that, they're very intricate in the way they play," Lowe told BBC Radio Lancashire. "Whether there's a rivalry or not, they've got a fantastic manager and it's a game that we feel will be important for both sets of clubs and fans. We'll treat them the same as we treat any other team - with respect but without any fear." Preston come into the short trip to Ewood Park off the back of a 3-2 win against Coventry City, and Lowe has no doubts about his side's resilience after another come-from-behind win. "I actually asked them before the game to try and outrun Coventry - if we did that we'd have a chance of winning, and we certainly did," he added. "Everything I've asked them to do they've gone out and done. We want to continue that as much as we can, having the mentality to come back. "That's the Championship of late. But I'm just pleased they go out and acquit themselves the right way." Blackburn had hovered around the bottom half of the Championship this season as they struggled to put points on the board. Their results have not always matched their performances on the pitch, but they have surged up the table courtesy of their better recent form. Sunday's win against Norwich City lifted Jon Dahl Tomasson's side five places from 15th to 10th and within striking distance of the top six. "I think we should be proud of our players with how they're performing at the moment. They have a lot of confidence and should do going into this derby," Tomasson told BBC Radio Lancashire. "There will be a lot of fans, it's going to be a great atmosphere so it's a great moment to put in a good performance before the international break as well." Rovers will have defender Scott Wharton back after his red card against Norwich was rescinded on appeal, but the club have suffered a blow with the news that Joe Rankin-Costello will be out for three months having suffered a hamstring injury during the victory. Dom Hyam is also out for Blackburn, giving Tomasson a defensive headache. "I'm disappointed for the players who are injured. We know the players want to help the team, which is why it is quite incredible that they have been able to win a lot of games recently, if you see how stressed the squad is," Tomasson added. "We've had a lot of away games and we've been travelling a lot. I'm disappointed to have injured players but the positive is that Scott Wharton is able to be involved after his red card against Norwich. "If we had been playing 11 versus 11, it probably would have been our biggest win this season." Analysis - A 'difficult derby to call' BBC Radio Lancashire's Andy Bayes This is a meeting of two teams who will feel they've a chance of reaching the top six this season, but in recent times haven't managed that feat. Blackburn Rovers haven't made the play-offs since they were relegated from the Premier League in 2012. Alan Irvine was the Preston North End boss the last time they made it to the play-offs, in 2009. Not a lot was expected of Rovers this season, following high-profile player departures and a chunk of the budget being removed over the summer. The reality is that they are pretty much where they were this time last year. They don't tend to draw matches, it's normally one or the other for them. North End likewise can be a little difficult to predict. Six straight wins was a dream start to the season following an opening-day draw, but that was followed by a seven-match winless run. Between 1980-81 and 2015-16 these two sides were in the same division for just one season (2000-01) but they've met in the second tier in seven out of the past eight campaigns. You'd be right not to call them arch-rivals. Ask Rovers fans and it's Burnley that they sing about. Similarly, North End consider Blackpool as their nearest and not so dearest. But, don't be fooled in to thinking that it means nothing to the supporters either. Both sides have had 4-1 away wins in this fixture in the past 19 months, so bragging rights are important. Who comes out on top heading in to the international break? It's a difficult one to call

Personally this could be a make or break moment for Lowe tonight he has talked the talk for too long the fans have backed him it’s time to deliver. Let’s face it we all know realistically we are a mid table possibly lower league team. Blackburn, never a Derby to me think I have been Once in 3o years. That said they have been in the top flight dropped out and are now trying to bounce back.If they finish higher than ourselves and god forbid they get in the play offs could be an indication that their youth policy and acquisitions are better than ours.

They’ve lost 4 out of 7 at home, not exactly unbeatable.
Feels like we’re about the same quality team now, have we got better or have they got worse? Probablyabit of both.
Chippy tea and straight to the game tonight, proper Lancashire evening.

What is the status on Hughes? Not worth the risk before the international break I’m guessing.
Please no Ledson in centre mid. Let’s go from it from the start. Same line up as Saturday will do me.

superiorno1pne, Quick question... if we know we're a mid to lower mid table team, but Lowe has us 6th, how is tonight make or break? Logic doesn't work for me somehow. I am with you in a way in that I'm no huge fan of RL, the style of play etc, but it's a results business and at the moment he's delivering. Some may say punching above his weight... I fear tonight could be a spanking. Just a gut feeling really.

I understand Moon Dog but I think what I am trying to say is if he starts on the front foot with attacking mentality we may just win. If he doesn’t and plays hoof ball and defends too deep we will lose. Six thousand plus are demanding the former.

I’m not Lowes biggest fan but we are not even close for Lowe to get sacked at this stage.
Imagine sacking the manager when we’re in a play off position? Got to be realistic. We’d need to be hovering around the relegation zone to sack Lowe.

Too deep conceding too much pressure need to play on the front foot as these will score. They appear masters of their own downfall they play it but no end product too intricate. Whiteman playing? Massive cliche but the next goal will decide this game.

3 more points impressed with some of their players we looked better when Evans came on too much nouse for them. Fair play though thought Potts Storey and Lindsay were poor. And I am delighted- honest!

Massive win tonight.
First half Whiteman outstanding. Did we see Smodics? No. That’s why!
What a goal and and Browne takes the plaudits for the finish but my oh my what a first touch. That touch is ridiculous from a technical point of view. Also Keane winning the ball at the beginning of the attack. Wonderful.
2nd half Smodics pushed further up and caused Storey problems, they deserved the equaliser and for 5 minutes after that looked like going on to win. Once we overcame that, it was pretty comfortable. Big Liam great goal, but again superb from Whitey and Browne in the build up.
Rovers were very good tonight.
But we won.
And JDT just saying how amazing it was to get such a big crowd. Dozy get! That’s because of the 6k away fans! He’s another one who lives in my village so I’m hoping to bump into him tomorrow 😂

And I am delighted- honest! I thought Potts was brilliant. Storey first half great, second half they pushed an extra man forward, which gave them an overload so Storey often had two to contend with. Like you say, who cares. We won. Enjoy the weekend Nobbers. Cruella resigning would cap it off.

3 points...a draw would probably have been a fair result on play but that's how it goes sometimes. We took our chances and they didn't despite some good build up play esp. in the second half. It's easy to see why we can't keep a clean sheet when nobody tracks runners and they are allowed to get in behind.
Pleased with Osmajic's first half performance, second he never got a decent ball. Millar disappointing but I suppose that is going to happen the way he plays...some days he'll go past defenders, other he will give the ball away.
Credit to Evans when he came on...showed a lot more nous than we'd seen from Keane and used his strength to hold up the ball.
I've said before that Best is not ready for Champ football..and I'm afraid tonight's game again showed why not. He put in an excellent cross for Osmajic's offside (again) 'goal' in the second half but all night struggled to contain his man and gave way some silly free kicks. Storey also had an indifferent game repeatedly giving the ball away.
Because of two great finishes for us and Rovers not firing at the front we got away with it tonight but the defending needs seriously addressing before we start shipping 3 and 4 a game again.

I thought the intensity and level of play was way above what we've seen in this derby fir a few seasons. Both sides have upped their game. Rovers had 20 shots! We showed resilience and came through. Led by our skipper.
No doubt a draw fair but who cares? Ched Evans looks in great shape and I felt his substitution could have come 10 minutes earlier. We needed his all round play to stabilise us moving forward. An outstanding championship game of football.

We won, thought possibly slightly fortunate to get all three points but that's the way the croissants crumbles after all*(Which band sang that?) At times they got behind us too easily, didn't think either full back had a decent game, Woodman badly positioned for Smozdics goal, same move couple of minutes later better positioned and saved it. Have to say they were great on the break but saying that goals pay the rent, we got two they got one. Browne's control of the ball for the first was outstanding and no keeper in the world was saving that. Mads clever header to Browne set up the cross, Lindsay wanted it more than their lad, carnage in the away end. What won us the match was the substitutions, Mads did some good work, but Ched was brilliant, he's a beast on the pitch won the ball and brought players into the game.
22 points to stay up
*The band 10cc

Being abit harsh on Best daws. First game playing CB 18 years old in a derby. Most kids would freeze but he stood up to the challenge. Definitely wasn’t the worst player on the pitch by far. Give the lad some credit.

It's the entire defensive set up that needs addressing px6......against a better quality side than Rovers we would have conceded 3 or 4 last night and this is what will happen if we carry on in the same vein.
We are being beaten far too easily by pace and by forwards or midfielders running in behind the back line and not being picked up. We are far better off with Hughes in there because of his positioning...plays close to Lindsay and stays on the goal side of his man.
Best is a prospect but I am not sure he knows what is role is out there...if he's playing lcb what's he doing putting in the best cross seen all night? He's being drawn out of position, leaving space behind him and not getting tight enough on his man....so what you see his him making sprints chasing the ball and his man when the opp. play the ball out wide right. It's also why he is committing fouls, getting there a fraction too late.
It's sortable...but a matter for the coaches.
As you infer he is not the only one at a defensive fault...Potts is no rb. I've remarked in an earlier post that Storey is no John Stones...he did it again last night bringing the ball forward...but unlike Stones holding it too long and losing it. He needs to stick to what he is best at....blocking, winning high balls, because last night even his passing was poor.
It's no wonder we can not keep a clean sheet. Neither Browne not Holmes tracked back last night and when you have got the opposition breaking quickly in numbers you need to do this. Players stood watching Smodic makes his scoring run last night....Lowe is right to be angry about it , the question is what he does to address it.
When we were not conceding we had five across the back line and a midfield defensive duo holding the space between the cbs. We seem to be all over the place at the moment.
Best is currently a weak link in this...but I am not blaming him for not knowing his role and as you infer he is not the only one....but, unlike others, with experience he can only get better.
It's the set up and coaching I am fundamentally questioning.

Woodmans kicking big improvement Best his passing and crossing is the best in the club but cant remember one good tackle or block from him in the whole game and a lot of the time he was in no mans land but he will get better if coached properly Potts and Millar do not have defensive skills and that made it easy to get round the back of us Storey for me was a rock in the first half tackles blocks and bringing the ball out from the back dawsonsjs, no he may not be John Stones but it is still better than hoofing it up the field which you and me in the past have been highly critical of Whiteman does a pretty good job in midfield but has no pace and rarely wins loose fifty fifty balls Browne was superb again especially in support of the two front men which enabled us to win the game Ched when he came on showed a big improvement on Keane neither of them got great service but put the hard work in to cause trouble and Osmajic again showed real promise even if a bit green good goal from Lyndsey showed real determination to get there first we could have lost the game but still one of our better showings for me all this of course is just my opinion and look forward to differing views
