As I type this, the month of October is about to draw to a close. I've not looked at the league table for a couple of weeks, but we're definitely still in the top half. Yet this Saturday's game is being referred to as a 'must win' game by significant sections of the fan base. Why is that? To me, it's about momentum. The season started, and most of us would have been happy with a top 10 finish and hopefully a push towards the top 6 - we signed a couple of players around the deadline and went on a ridiculous run, a run we all knew could not continue for ever. This run ended suddenly (and not surprisingly!) with defeats to Leicester, Ipswich and WBA... but we've not arrested the decline as Mark Robins' Coventry City ride into town (hopefully not naked on a horse).
Coventry have had a shocking start to the season, yet there are minimal calls for the removal of the manager - the only gaffer in the division to have been in post longer than our Ryan. It appears they are missing Gyokeres, and other players seem to be having a dose of 'second season syndrome'. They are currently languishing close to the bottom of the table and surely will end this run soon, as they are playing some decent football, but not putting the ball away at key times. Last night, for instance, Haji Wright (I believe he is the great, great, great grandnephew of Arsenal legend Ian) missed a sitter at 0-0 and Coventry conceded a goal soon after. My summary is that Coventry will improve their form sooner rather than later and move gradually up the table, but hopefully not this weekend.
So back to us... how can a game like this be marked as 'must win'? It's certainly not a case of 'teams like Cov' as we know they're decent. It's about us, stopping the rot before negativity overtakes Deepdale as it did pretty much all of last season. There's a poll live elsewhere on a PNE forum that has 42% of the fans saying Lowe should be sacked. defeat on Saturday would, I fear, turn the atmosphere toxic, which to be fair doesn't help the team at all... so let's hope for an early goal, another one, followed by another one and a strong performance to bring the early season enthusiasm back to Deepdale. COYW.
