It seems like a long time since the mighty whites played Plymouth. So long in fact, I've got vague memories of some lad called Gallagher looking dangerous from set pieces against us in a night match. Some things stick in your memory somehow and a 1-1 draw with a MOTM performance from the goalkeeper Roman Larrieu is a real 'memory match' for me, so I thought I'd kick off the thread with a section on this game. I recall that we absolutely battered them but just could not score. I have looked it up and turns out it took place in 2009. Cant find any footage! news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/7861132.stmInteresting seeing all the names - Alan Judge as an unused Sub for Plymouth. He must have been pretty young then as well. It was interesting to see the Paul Sturrock quote using the 'Teams Like Preston' comment that has shifted its meaning these days. He was saying it was good to get a point at Deepdale, whereas nowadays #teamslikepreston is the highlight of a Saturday evening. Also good to see Ryan Lowe was not the instigator of the 'wasn't the lack of trying' comment, with Father Ted wheeling it out in 2009. Going back further in time, I did find this... Shilton in the nets and as always the ex player coming back to score against us. Warren didn't really celebrate though! Hard to believe I was a teenager when that game took place (just!) And this... An absolute thunderbolt from Danny Pugh (that's for you makemineapint) and a standard Grezza penalty to enjoy. So what do I know about Plymouth as a place? Not much really. It's a long way away. They've got a good fan base. They play in a goalie kit and they beat the plastics 3-0 last weekend. Time for a bit of finding out about Plymouth. My research basically took me down a real rabbit hole of nautical themed 'interesting facts', none of which interested me in the slightest to be honest. Blah blah blah boats, etc etc... However, a few things stood out: Originally Plymouth Argyle Football Club was known as Plymouth Argyll Football Club, as the founders of the club wished the team to emulate the style of football played by the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. The name was later changed to ‘Argyle’ because the founding members had rooms in Argyle Terrace in Plymouth.
Plymouth Original Strength Gin has been distilled at England’s oldest working distillery, Black Friars on Plymouth’s historic Barbican since 1793
Jackas Bakery, located on the Barbican, is reputed to be the oldest commercial bakery in the world still in operation
In 1919 Nancy Astor became the first woman Member of Parliament, representing the constituency of Sutton in PlymouthThere you go, some non-boat related Plymouth facts for you! Onto the game itself - Plymouth, under the guidance of the former F1 Driver Michael Schumacher, have made a decent start to life in the Championship, with a great result last weekend, which was even better as they had been battered and Blackburn should have been out of sight before Plymouth scored, which makes it even funnier. ginagee - This is for you. Isn't Blackburn's goalkeeper poor? Can't believe they let Kaminski go as they had Tommy Teflon playing! www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/football/12953359/plymouth-3-0-blackburn-championship-highlightsThey were awesome at home last season and have decent backing home and away. I anticipate they'll bring 1.5k+ and will be noisy, which makes for a good atmosphere. Key players: I don't know much about the team, as they are newly promoted, but I do know that Ryan Hardie is a striker that RL likes and admires, so we need to keep him quiet. They sadly don't have Freeman and Willis as his strike partners (you're at least 45 years old if you get that cultural reference). They play 433 and have Eden Hazard in goal - maybe... a quick scour of their website tells me that they have an unusually high proportion of players with beards and one of the defenders has a lovely bouffant hairdo. How's that for detailed tactical insight? Us... The international break comes at a good time. We're TOP OF THE LEAGUE and are going to potentially be stronger now, as Whiteman and Riis appear to be fit, Ramsay won't be too far off and of course, the two deadline day signings will come into the picture. With this in mind, sad to say that FRG, Seary, Woodburn and maybe Mawene, won't be making the matchday squads. Seary is too old for U19 football, as is Lewis Leigh, so if there are spaces on the bench, expect them to be there ahead of the younger lads, who can get some game time in the academy. My view... We have to be realistic and pragmatic - we won't win every game that we 'expect' to and this is definitely a banana skin. newly promoted team, playing well, good players, confident, good manager, our boss was there. All points to a difficult afternoon and definitely no 'Teams like Plymouth' comments should we come unstuck. However, we have to view this as an opportunity to get 3 points and to continue to be in the automatic spots. 2-0 PNE is my prediction. Goals from Browne and Mads... On a personal note, this will be the last game I attend with the boy for a while as he's off to Uni on Sunday. I'm sure the people who sit behind us will be pleased as they've got a chance of seeing the game now. It also means most weeks there will be a spare seat by my side, so if anyone ever wants to come and have a change of view, give me a DM, and I'll let you know if it is a spare seat. If you see an old man crying into his coffee on the AKTE on Tuesday night against Birmingham, it'll probably be me!

Thanks for the thread Mooney...interesting as ever (put me down for the Tractor Boys away, just made arrangements to go there). I note Roy Hodgson spoke highly of Plymouth after Palace's recent Cup match there....described the manager as doing 'an excellent job', with a well organised team and some 'good players'. Looks like a potential banana skin for us
I recall Peter Shilton in his 40s playing for Plymouth at Deepdale....and very impressively he was with lightening reflexes.
Worst experience I've ever had at an away game at Plymouth in the 90s..it was a Friday night match which we won. Kept in after final whilstle and then had to walk under the main stand from the away end to get to the main road as stewards would not release us straight out into a park. On leaving the ground the doors had to be quickly bolted after getting back inside...bricks , bottles the whole lot thrown at us. I had a terrified 'security' young woman shelter behind me. Coaches also had all their windows smashed in. I made a formal com[laint to the County Constab and got a reply that as the club had not paid its police bill, police support had been withdrawn. My response that as far as I was aware PNE supporters of working age paid national taxes which in return are rebated to County Councils to provide a Police service for everyone within their region...locals and visitors.....this never got answered.
As for the game I just don't know how it will go...confidence has got to be high but we've to put the ball in the net and without Keane this may be an issue.

Cracking thread Mooney, thanks for the Plastics highlights Interesting quandary up front, so annoyed if Keano out due to flipping International game injury .... can't imagine Milutin Osmajic will be ready for 90 mins, not even met his team mates yet, Millar an option, not sure Riis match ready, A lot of Plymouth fans still bitter about Lowe's departure and they are treating the game with extra interest:- Plymouth Fans Forum :- pasoti.co.uk/forums/plymouth-argyle-fans-forum.30/

Cracker that one Mooney, I liked Danny Pugh, thought he got a rough deal from some of the fan base.
Thought he showed a lot of bottle coming back on loan after the stick he took.
Hope we don't have the "after the international break syndrome"
I'll be in the Sir Tom stand for this one, wonder if I'll see are new Montenegrin striker perform, who would have thought eh!

Don't remember Danny Pugh having the acrobatics in his locker tbf! Always liked Brett Ormerod, good player. Did the commentator say 30 games unbeaten at Deepdale?! Them were the days.
I'm missing this one and given the injury to Keane it'll interesting how we deal with that. Strikerless formation? Whiteman back? Osmajic and Millar straight in?
Back for the Birmingham with a group of Canadians also attending (partners family), who are from the same neck of the woods as Millar. Hopefully a lucky charm for him!

Could be another tasty one. Both managers will have their men fired up for this one.
Any news on William Keane? Could we chuck the new lad straight in? Would be a massive ask.
2-1 north end.

Green Army in peace. Looking forward to a cracking match on Saturday. You are top of the league and full of confidence and we are establishing ourselves in the Championship, riding on the wave of a great season. We play attacking, possession based football and Steve Schumacher, our boss, is a good tactician changing our formation during matches and making full use of our substitutes. Our subs scored more than the subs from any team in the top 4 leagues last season. Ryan Lowe left us to join you, a “bigger” club. He did well at Plymouth, but unlike Schumacher he never moved his family down here. My main reason for coming on here was to recall one major piece of history - March 18 1975 Argyle 2 PNE 1 and your goal was scored by Bobby Charlton. It was his last ever football league goal if my memory serves me well. I was at the match and have always had a soft spot for PNE since, but not Saturday! Good luck for the rest of your season.

I believe there will be a bit of animosity towards Lowe on Saturday but he’s left you in good stead and the coach he brought with him has taken you that step further. We’ve had it previously with Billy Davies and Simon Grayson, both taking the ‘sideways’ move as us fans saw it. BD proved to be the right choice with promotion in his 1st season at Derby (but didn’t last long in the prem) Simon Grayson ended up with egg in his face at Sunderland and hasn’t recovered his career from that move. I think in this scenario, all has ended well. Lowe got a champ move and a move closer to his beloved Liverpool while Schumacher has gone on to do a great job in getting you boys promoted and I fully expect you to stay in the league. Would’ve though a more respected thanks but we’ve now moved on (a bit like we give to Alex Neil these days) would’ve been appropriate but I can’t really comment on how you lot saw the move down there. Can’t say I have ever begrudged a player or manager a move to a club in a higher division. Disappointing to loose Callum Robinson and Greg Cunningham to newly promoted teams after being competitive with these teams in the league the season before but always appreciated the work they’d done and respected their decision to step up to the next level. I know he left you flying high in the league but this was at the half way point and promotion is sadly never a guarantee. You have a great catchment area for decent crowds down there so you could make a real good go of it with the momentum you are currently on. Sadly, with all the big boys on our doorstep, we struggle for the crowds to pull in the revenue to really compete. Smart recruitment is needed at this level so good luck with the season. Well done on your last performance, it was appreciated in these parts!

Thank you for beating Plastics 3 0, means a lot Also reading between the lines thanks for also selling them a bit of an injury prone dud in Ennis 😊 My late parents always recall a game they attended at Home Park whilst on their honeymoon in the late 50’s, in fact it’s they only game they ever attended together due to split allegiances Good look for the season apart from the 2 games against us

Find it puzzling people would begrudge a person to increase his pay and move back with his family. Gotta be a rotten sour grape to deny anyone that opportunity.

Hi all, Argyle in peace, I will be making the long journey on Saturday morning up from Cornwall. Just a couple of comments, just to shine an Argyle perspective on things. This is a comment we see quite regularly however he left on three straight defeats (discounting his last game in the FA cup against League two Rochdale). A lot of the Argyle fans began to feel he had been found out, the tactics were predictable and he was too stubborn to change things up, no change of shape even when falling behind, it was the same like for like changes and it simply didn't work. Find it puzzling people would begrudge a person to increase his pay and move back with his family. Gotta be a rotten sour grape to deny anyone that opportunity. This is another misconception, I don't think anyone would begrudge anyone a pay increase or being closer to their family. The three things that rubbed people up the wrong way was 1) The first Preston interview being an almost carbon copy of the Argyle one, the usual tag lines "When you get the opportunity to manage Preston North End, you don't say no." funnily enough he said the same exact thing about Argyle amongst others. 2) Probably the one that caused the most damage "Plymouth Argyle didn’t have an identity until we turned up there", I'm not entirely sure what was going through his head when this one came out. Did he improve us? Yes. Did he pick the club up with his media friendly personality when the club was at a low after the disconnect between Adams (previously sacked manager) and the fans? Yes. But I'm not really sure what was the intended meaning of the statement, our club is and has been well known for years for the amount of fans travelling the long distances. This statement certainly raised eyebrows. 3) I'm sure everyone has heard the rumors of why he left Plymouth, which I will not repeat for obvious reasons, but even after all these comments and how it was a wonderful opportunity for him, a lot of people were left feeling he had to leave rather than wanted to leave questioning just how hollow were/are his words from the last 2.5 years.

I have often said that Ryan would be well advised to avoid media duties as his words often come out in a way that don’t always sound right. Safe journey up, it’s a long trek so fair play to you.

Truth is, this is that every manager and player roles out the same media spiel no matter what! Many North End fans would be looking at getting rid of RL if we hadnt started so well. At the end of pre- season the general consensus was that "the car salesman" was taking us nowhere- mainly for the reasons you quoted... but to give RL some credit he has changed his tune this year, played to the players strengths and avoided using the "brand" he goes on about. Although its still very much about the players following "his" great game plan! Truth is that RL is a decent motivator if everyone is buying in and can talk a good game!!

That’s the fickle world of football, if he loses 10 games in a row he’d be sacked. Gets the club promoted and sets them on the journey to the championship and gets pelters for moving on.
No doubt if he moves on from us it will be for better opportunities, and I hope he does because that means we must be doing well. That’s football.

I seem to remember speaking to a Plymouth fan just after Lowe was appointed and he said we had got the wrong man and that the club stuck by both of them when they went on a run of no win in 16 or something games so they expected a bit more from Lowe.
