roger One of my mates is a Gooner, and he always refers to Spuds as ‘Spuds’. Is there an offensive and obnoxious reason for this, or is it just a case of replacing a letter to make another word? I've been called much worse than that. 'Spuds' is pretty much a term of endearment.
Gooners, however, are normally referred to as Scum, or Woolwich C***s, because Woolwich is where they really belong. Ever had someone move in near to you who is really obnoxious and proceeds to treat your area like they own it? Neighbours From Hell. That's Woolwich for you (they're never referred to by their A****** name, because that would imply acceptance of their status as a North London club, which they clearly are not). Woolwich (an area south of the Thames) is a South London club, as you can tell from their disgustingly unaesthetic kit and even more disgusting supporters.
North London is ours North London is ours F*** off back to Woolwich North London is ours
...as the chant goes.
ps, as I adore potatoes, if someone called me a Spud I'd take it as a compliment.
Did someone mention spuds? Food from the gods!

Just had a nice bit of tripe...beats jellied eels any day (like swallowing snot).
Here's info on the local cloggies
Regrettably wearing is now almost (not completely ) confined to dancing, here are the local classes
Regular Clog Dance Classes. ECCLESTON (Chorley) Mondays – Eccleston Heritage Clog – For adults. 7.30-8.30pm (beginners) 8.30-9.30pm (intermediate/advanced) Tuesdays – Eccleston Buskers - For young people aged 5 upwards. 5.30-7pm.
Softie Southern Morris dancers always flee when they see male Cloggies coming (very different from the gentle ladies) . There has never been any stamping on heads , much more sophisticated in Lancashire
The scurrilous delights of Lancashire clog-dancing involves two teams dancing towards each other in formation, followed by each attempting to cripple their opponents with gracefully executed knee and foot moves. Thus the Forward Sir Percy, a synchronized low-level knee attack, the Double Arkwright wi' Ankle Lever, the Heckmondwycke with Reverse Spin and the ever controversial Triple Arkwright. Other routines include the Half Arkwright with Groin Action, the Erotic Elbow Drive and the match-winning Flying Arkwright, performed to cries of, “Keep them knees stylish!”
The secret to success has always been to knock back 12 pints of suitably warm brown ale before starting. The only time I've ever seen anybody's head stamped on was when a dancer was caught ordering tasteless cold lager (apparently he spent too long living in Bethnal Green...wherever that is).

Don't forget you'll get a head on your ale up here, none of the flat room temperature ale . When I lived down South I recall asking a barman to pour my pint with a head on it. He put a lemonade top in!

Preston Facts & FirstsFollowing the little bit of humour about us northerners being a little bit behind it got me thinking about the great things Preston actually brought to the UK 1) Why not start with the way in , did you know that the UKs first bit of motorway the M6 was opened here in 1958. The first traffic cones were used in the construction . 2) What about something to eat , Englands first KFC was opened in 1965 3) Top Gears and former England cricketer Freddie Flintoff was born in the city in December 1977 4) Fancy a bit of animation , well did you know the creator of the Beano's Bash St Kids , Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx and Little Plum Leo Baxendale was born and studied in the city. If you want something a little more up to date Nick Park the creator of Wallace and Gromit also belongs to Preston and even named his plasticine dog after the town. 5) Following the early success of Preston’s male footballers the ladies thought they would have a go. Dick Kerr’s Ladies are probably the most famous and most successful women’s football team in the world. Founded in Preston Dick, Kerr’s Ladies represented England and beat France in the first ever recognised women’s international football tournament in 1920. England won 2–0 at Deepdale, home of PNE. In 1922 they went on to tour the USA playing mostly men’s teams. 6) Preston is home to the worlds longest line of red phoneboxes (9) designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott they were voted one of the UKs most iconic things . Another notable design of his was Battersea Power Station 7) Preston has its tv and film stars with routes in the city . Roy Barraclough (Corrie) , John Inman (Are you being served) , Peter Purves (Blue Peter) and John Thomson to name a few. Ever seen the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with Paul Newman and Robert Redford well Butch's father lived in the city. Guess where Star Wars R2D2 came from yes Preston . The actor Kenny Baker lived and died here . 8) The Butter Pie , when you come to Preston you have to get a "Butter Pie" (should be available in the ground) . The pie is known to have been created for workers from Lancashire's Catholic community, to consume on days (mainly Friday) when meat could not be eaten, This dish is also mentioned in the Paul and Linda McCartney song "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", which contains the lyrics, "I had another look and I had a cup of tea and butter pie" 9) The town of 'Coketown' in Charles Dickens' book Hard Times is based on the city of Preston. In order to gain research for an 'industrial' novel, Dickens visited Preston in January 1854. 10) There’s no better place to enjoy some non-alcoholic fun than the city where the teetotalism movement was born! In 1833, Joseph Livesey founded The Preston Temperance Society, and soon afterwards the word ‘teetotal’ was born. (Wouldn't recommend it myself) 11) The tallest spire in England, St Walburge's Church boasts a towering 309ft spire. The spire is the tallest of any Parish church in England and the third tallest of any church in the UK, with only the spires of Salisbury and Norwich Anglican Cathedral reaching higher. The church was built in the mid-19th century and was designed by Gothic Revival architect Joseph Hansom, who was also the designer of the Hansom cab. 12) The City’s bus station was at one point the largest in Europe and it is still one of the largest in Europe Im sure there are many things i haven't mentioned but that should keep you busy for ten minutes

Looks like it’s going to be a great occasion with a full house. Really looking forward to it now, despite the long journey. Would be an excellent time for H to break Greaves’ record with a decent away following and the game on national TV. The drive home if we manage to lose this will be a treat. Wouldn’t mind a recommendation for some proper local beer, and by that I don’t mean new world hipster craft crap. I try and find JW Lees pubs when up in Manchester.

Be interested also to know what the Preston perspective is on getting into the PL. Many of your geographical rivals, like Blackpool, Wigan, Burnley and Blackburn have all had stints in the PL. Long term they haven’t really benefitted - and only Blackburn were decent for a bit - but is it something you really want?

Also on a literary theme, Joseph Delaney, children’s author (Spooks series. Very good for 10-13 year olds and adults who are big kids!) is a Prestoner, and the ‘Priestown’ in the book is here. While I’m at it, Charles Dickens stayed in a hotel in Preston (what is now the Bull and Royal) and seemingly Hard Times was inspired by the trip. We’re heading back to those days again sadly, but no politics! Deepdale is the oldest football stadium to have had continuous use in the world. The home of football. Last one from me… The Caribbean Carnival was a big part of my younger life and was one of the first of its kind in Britain. Preston has for many years had a diverse culture and unlike many other neighbouring Lancashire towns, our indigenous population has welcomed this and Preston has had more integration through events like this for many years.

Imagine that! 😂 Welcome aboard Gobbo. I agree and for me the team would be: Woodman Browne Storey Lindsay Hughes Brady McCann Whiteman Woodburn Cannon Evans However, I think Evans will probably start up top on his own with Woodburn and DJ playing as two 10s. Also wouldn’t be surprised to see Ledson start ahead of super Ali.

Long term they haven’t really benefitted - and only Blackburn were decent for a bit - but is it something you really want? You may touch on a nerve with this question for a few posters here. BTW you missed Bolton and even Oldham out of your list of relatively local rivals who have played in the PL Yes we'd love to get to the PL and for many there is much frustration that we never appear to be getting there, especially when those local rivals point this out. Indeed we've not been in the top flight since Sir Tom Finney retired in 1960! I personally feel that some of our fans need to take a reality check. We are spending well beyond our means (the latest accounts show approximately a £20M loss and wages of around 175% of annual turnover). Our owners are worth over a £billion (last Times rich list estimate) and some fans feel that they should be chucking more money at it. But so is virtually every other club in the Championship and IMHO we are punching above our weight. If you consider there are more professional clubs in the NW than in London, with a lower overall population, including Liverpool, United, City & Everton currently in the PL, means that attracting fans is difficult. But then people point out how our rivals have done it and arguably with us having a wealthier owner than Jack Walker at Rovers, who won the PL, we should be at least challenging. However, I remember not too long ago finishing 91st in the league and almost going out of business. I've seen us in the play-off final to get to the PL twice and could never have though in the '80s that I'd see PNE one game away from the top flight. Unfortunately we didn't show up on those 2 occasions in Cardiff against Bolton & West Ham. But the simple answer to the question is YES!

Under pressure from my son have given in and got tickets Tom Finney Block H Row 6 not sure about the view? Whilst you'll be almost next to the away end, the views are unrestricted. I think you'll be level with the goal at the Shankly end. Whilst you're going to be a way from the other end, the view isn't any worse than being behind the goal in my opinion.
