Preston North End V Norwich City Deepdale 3pm Sat 14th Jan 2023
Norwich
When Norwich sacked Dean Smith last month, sporting director Stuart Webber made it clear the club's ambition for this season remains an immediate return to the Premier League. It currently looks a long way off. A run of three wins in 15 Championship games has seen them drop to 11th just a point behind PNE. . They were top at the start of October. To stand a chance of saving their season, the Canaries needed someone who could hit the ground running and new boss Wagner's CV includes promotion with Huddersfield. It was Webber who appointed him at the Terriers so the duo have a proven working relationship and will want to prove they can pick up where they left off. If it doesn't work this time the pressure will build on Webber. A miserable run of one win in nine Championship matches at Carrow Road means that one of Wagner's first tasks will be to build bridges towards an increasingly disillusioned fan base.(I wonder if there is comparable disillusion anywhere else?) Delia: Can't write about Norwich without mentioning Delia and the iconic 'let's be having you' moment when she had had too much of the sherry trifle. I think it's a smashing yo yo club with the huge advantage of not having another League club within 1,000 miles of them and we have had some good games with them over the years. (I still recall a great keeper, Kevin Keenan, at the time we had Alan Kelly Sen in goal!). Delia has recently welcomed American billionaire Mark Attanasio, the owner of the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team, onto the board....looks like yet another reventual American takeover (what's in it for them?) North End
Who knows what team will turn up (or will play?) Let's be blunt the home League form and results have been dire and I don't think the FA Cup boost (coming against a woeful Huddersfield defence) will have lifted the mood. We all know the issues....unbalanced side, crab sideways football, pedantic build ups due to the lack of pace, lack of strikers, poor use of subs, a 3-5-2 system that has patently not worked at home. Some of you may think this bizarre but I'd try Diaby as a centre forward! Another drab performance from PNE will not do....but against the Norwich attack there will be a need to be wary of pushing up too much. Norwich have got strikers in Sergeant and Puki and the defence will need to be alert. Form & Table A foot in both camps

Thanks for the thread Daws. Funnily enough I thought the same. The way Diaby took his goal, I thought that maybe he could do it for us when needed.

It's closer to 50 miles Tommy and it takes up to about 90 mins to drive depending on the traffic/time of day (I've a sister near Ipswich). Imagine if the North End's nearest club was somewhere like Halifax , Stockport or Chester and the catchment potential. My experience of talking to fans down there is that they draw a line at the County boundary....if in Norfolk support Norwich, Suffolk and it's Ipswich. You can see this in the coach car parks at match days (similar situation as at Derby) when there are dozens of coaches parked up from all over the County. We just don't get that level of County-wide support.

Surely Ipswich is just some 30 or so miles away. Norwich enjoy the full support of Norfolk and Ipswich enjoy the full support of Suffolk.

Oddly there used to be a coach leave the local pub for Man U games. Says it all really.

ta for the thread: anyone know when we have to have signed a player for them to be available for Saturday? really hoping we have a forward in, even if its just off the bench.
Personally i prefer Storey to Bambo but he doesn't deserve to lose his place, so i can see the same back 3 starting.
Alvaro has been looking tired and i think if Brady is fit enough he will come back in. Potts is my choice over Browne at rwb too if hes fit.
FW BD LL AH BP BW Ledo RB DJ Ched and Cannon or Woodburn (who i think did well last game)

Cannon is now signed up and can play Saturday, with Parrot hopefully back and fit we could now actually have some choice up front

Well after a shot from Cannon, maybe Parrot will pick up the pieces of eight... Really going for it with the pirate based player names! I think Wagner is a poor appointment. Norwich supporters won't warm to his 'brand of football' and I think he'll be gone before the season is over. In the short term, he may well give them better organisation and solidity. With that in mind, I'm taking a pillow. 0-0

Referee is Stephen Martin he made headlines after he reffed our 4 0 defeat to Luton last season with his Forest Gump impression He has brandished 73 yellows and 2 reds so far this season with 59 in the championship and both his reds. He averages 4 cards a game. Looks like its his first PNE Game this season

Most Refs tend not to favour North End at Home. For Whatever reason, I do not know but they are incompetent, prejudiced - or I am.

Would like to see us go for 3-5-2 as follows:- Woodman Browne, Whiteman, McCann ,Johnson, Fernandez Delap, Cannon
Plenty of ammunition now with an Overlap, a Cannon and a few more shots on Target than we have seen so far. Feeling much Happier

Not on recent performances, but they should be better Not sure Wal we could beat them with just eight players though! Glad you both spotted my deliberate mistake - I didn't. Possibly it was because I could not make my mind up whether Diaby needed a run in the Team. We do however need 3 at the back and Storey /Lindsay/Hughes would be my choice. Incidentally, it is interesting to see that what goes around comes around. When I started watching PNE everyone used the same formation. We had Gooch GK, Walton&Cunninghsm LB & RB, Forbes/Marston/Docherty LH/CH/RH, Baxter & Thompson IL & IR, withMorrison/Wayman/Sir Tom OL/CF/OR. One of the Half backs was Attacking & one of the Inside Forwards was more Defensive or Link-up. The current trend for 3-5-2 or3-4-2-1 replicates this except the 3 Defenders play narrower with either side moving out to their Wings to cover. They No. 10 position has become a a Goalscorers position like Tommy Thompson, although he was an 8. Hope my memory hasn't failed me, but there is nothing new in football and Tactics only work when the players play football. By that I mean that Possession on its own counts for nothing if you don't score & allow the Opposition to score. The City /Southampton game demonstrated this. We're not bad in this Division at keeping possession but do little with it &, when we do, fluff the Chances. Hopefully the new guys have the Youth to take risks & score Goals.

RL to blame for this, you could see after 3 minutes not 3 goals that we needed to go to a back 5!!!

1st goal was a defender just stood staring into space as if he'd just realised we'd kicked off. 2nd was really well taken. 3rd a big blunder/ mixup....
An early goal in the second might make it interesting.

Very poor , we got a lesson today
Diaby never a midfielder or RWB and was out on his feet after 55 mins but left on too long. Johnson off the pace and not the answer on left , Alvaro offered more balance but shown up by teemu for 4th goal Mccann unlucky to be taken off imo Browne worked hard Like Delaps workrate Brady and Parrot going to need some game time
Pukki on a different level to us

Only Browne Delap and Cannon can take any credit from that absolute shambles Thank goodness the 4th Official took pity on us and only added 1 minute after 7 subs, 4 bookings and a goal 2nd half Truly woeful Desperate stuff, outclassed, utterly embarrassing …. how to ruin a Saturday night 😫

Time for this Westley mark two to go.

Time for this Westley mark two to go. I agree. For me he got everything wrong today yet has blamed the players. Only gonna end one way. 1) Flat back 4 against Norwich, exposing Lindsay’s lack of pace against quick strikers. 2) Bambo at RB 3) Browne and DJ as wide attackers - the formation was more of a 4231 really or 4411 but if ever he wanted to make players look worse than they are, that’s how to do it. 4) Players didn’t know their roles. 5) Needed 1 change on 20 minutes. Alvaro or Brady on for Diaby. Then go 352 and leave Ali and Woodburn on. 6) Press conference- fails to take responsibility for the defeat. I’d personally give him 3 games to prove me wrong, but we’ve scored 8 goals at home in 14 games. Clock is ticking! Today was unacceptable, I agree with him, but this is on him. Teflon man.
