Preston North End vs Sheffield United
Sheffield United is a team that I am very familiar with, having a Sister-in-law & family that lived in Sheffield not too far from Bramhall Lane and a good friend here who is a United Supporter. As a consequence, I have seen many games at both Stadia.
History etc: the Owner is Abdullah bin Musaid Al Saud, and their Manager is Paul Heckingbottom. They were formed in 1892 and became Founder-members of the Premier League in 1992. However, they were relegated in 2021 but are one of the favourites for Promotion back to the Premiership this Season. They were Cup Winners in 1899, 1902,1915 & 1925 & lost in the Final in 1901 & 1936 but nothing since.
Well-known Players: although he is not the most well-known, arguably the most famous was Bill “Fatty” Foulke, who kept Goal from 1894-1905. He was 6'4'' tall & 24 stones in weight, playing for England on 1 occasion. He died at the early age of 42yrs, possibly related to his size. Joe Shaw holds the record for most Appearances at 713. About the same time was Jimmy Hagan, whom I remember as a skilful Inside Forward, playing 16* for England. Their most succesful period that I recall was the early 70s. They were promoted to Division 1, then the top Division, in 1972 and nearly won the League if my memory serves me well. At that time they had a wonderful Midfielder in Tony Currie, Alan Hodgkinson , who played for England & still remains the youngest person to keep Goal for England, together with Trevor Hockey Alan Woodward, , Colin Grainger et al. There was a match vs Villa at Villa Park when Villa were leading comfortably 2-0 at Halftime. Tony Currie at his best was unstoppable and the 2nd half he ran the show making 2 Goals for Alan Woodward with Sheffiel winning 3-2. Colin Grainger was a “Flyer”, playing for England 7 times. However, he was also a talented Singer and took this up full -time when he finished playing. The highlight was sharing the Bill with the Beatles in June 1963, always saying that he earned more than the Beatles , as they had to Divi-up their Fee 4 ways! Later on they had Robert Page , who is now the Manager of Wales. Joe Mercer was the Sheffield Manager 1958-64 & there was one match away at Villa in 1956 when Derek Pace sored 3 Goals against him to win the match 3-2 for Villa. Joe was so taken with Derek Pace that he signed him up on the spot after the game and Pace was on the coach back to Sheffield with his new Teammates. They did things differently those days.
Dual-Club players: There are a number of players who played for both Teams, notably my pal Ian Bryson, who played for them 1988-93 on 177 occasions. Don't know which Team he will be supporting on the day! Richard Cresswell played for them 2009-2013 on 141 occasions scoring 30 goals. Alan Kelly Jnr played for them 1992-1999, making 255 appearances. The other one that comes to mind is Ched Evans 2009-2012, 113 appearances and 48 goals. Blades Supporters always said that , if it were not for the Trial & Judgement, Evans would have kept United up that Season with his Goals. Would that he could score for us on Saturday.
The Match: They are , at the time of writing ,Top of our League, with a tough game at Swansea to come. Whilst they have only conceded 5 Goals, they have scored 16 in 8 games. Can we stop them scoring? Possibly. Can we score? Probably not. However, I expect us to give a good account for themselves & would not be surprised for a Draw. Final comment after tonight's results, good Draw against Burnley for the Nobbers, Blades win in the final moments. What can we draw from these results – buggerall! We can beat Sheffield, unless they score first. Still going for a Draw – we are a very difficult team to beat and fair does to the Manager. The team is very well-drilled & I am not unhappy at the way we play. Don't have the Budget of most Teams and we are still competing. Come on you Lillywhites! (Please feel free to input the Team Logos, coz I cannot understand how to do it)

3-2 - a goalfest!
Great thread Wally - I love the whole ‘played for both clubs’ but, always find that interesting. Adding Alan Kelly Jr to that list! I saw enough last night to think we can beat these.

Not seen much of the Blades this season...but their fans tell me they have signed a gem in Ahmedozvic(if that's how you spell it)/ left sided cb. On paper they have strong defence with the likes of Egan and Basham in there. Not convinced by their attack even though they can break at real pace. Need to watch them at set pieces with Basham and Ahmed coming forward.
As for us..what options have we got? I can't see that Parrot is adding anything more than Maguire could do...and whilst Potts is putting in a shift at wb it's noticeable that it's his defensive covering that is standing out. Bit of a shake up required. Hence I'd go
Woodman Storey Lindsay Hughes Brady or Potts Browne Whiteman McCann Alvarez McGuire
I am assuming Brady can play on the right....if so I'd move Potts in behind Maguire on the basis that he can shoot, and out wide he's just not getting into position to do so.
Blades are going to win everything in the air at the back anyway so let's keep the ball on the deck and try and play through them. The Alvarez/McCann combination worked well at Huddersfield and needs to be tried again.
I expect another large contingent of fans travelling from Bramall Lane even though there are no trains on Saturday. I really feel the home fans have so far this season been doing their bit...time for some reward.

If we hit 20k, its the 1st time since the 70's weve done 20k back to back.. if we had beat Rovrum and Hull etc, id be happy with 2 points from the dingles and SU, but 3 points has to be the target now. Hughes has to start as much for his overlapping option ahead of Greg and despite Brady being one of out top performers-without an Andy Carroll converting his deep crosses hes ended up being another player that doesnt fit RL's plans.. So id give Alvares a start and see if we can get behind them. Parrot needs a break for me, id give him the last 20 when there are some tired legs and start with Riis and Ched or Seani.. probably Seani to see what's hes got to offer.
FW Storey Lindsay Hughes Browne Whiteman Ledo (or McCann) Alvares DJ Seani Riis

walburghian, [email protected], Mooney, dawsonsjs, Bobby Ham's sarnie, PNE From Afar, pne1971, Phantom Winger, Good to see so many different contributors to the match thread already. Team for me... it's difficult. I'm one of DJ's biggest fans and it really made me despair to hear him being given stick from the crowd at times on Tuesday, largely for not picking people up who weren't his to mark! I genuinely feel he is given unfair treatment - the 'lazy' tag resurfaced as well this week. DJ runs, and runs and runs... lazy isn't right. That said, he hasn't been at his best lately and I think we need something of a reset. A few things I genuinely believe: 1) Whiteman as the CDM on his own doesn't work. He needs Ledson alongside him to do this (or Browne I guess) 2) Alvaro HAS to start. What this means for Brady who knows? 3) Riis and Parrott - again, these two were getting stick on Tuesday - in fairness, it's hardly their fault that Burnley had 70% possession and whenever we got it back we launched it in their direction is it? 4) Maguire... I would have brought him on on Tuesday night. For all his faults, he does drop into spaces and we have seen him create chances and goals for Riis in the past 5) Evans - a waste of a shirt. I'd rather they had O Neill on the bench (I'd rather they had me on the bench) With all that in mind, it's my reset time! 343 Woodman Storey, Lindsay, Hughes (what a difference he made when he came on) Potts, Whiteman, Ledson, Alvaro (can somebody tell me the words to his song?) Maguire Riis Parrott Let's go 343 and stop their CHs being able to pile forward.

Alvaroooo (words to that affect, I think) Has to start and over Brady too. Brady is a tidy player and has quality but Fernadez makes us a completely different prospect. Far better physically, can beat a man and not afraid of having a shot or getting to the by-line. DJ not been great but the lazy comments irritate me. Still one of our best players just out of form currently. Had people blaming him for stuff he was nowhere near on Tuesday. Would have rather seen Maguire on for Ched other night. Parrott really needs a goal at this point but agree him and Riis were fighting a losing battle on Tuesday as they were never gonna see the ball.

Time we tried Browne in his Ireland position, so would go with 3-1-4-2 with Potts on the bench. Didn't like Brady @rwb, as he kept turning back to get the ball onto his left foot.

Have to go for a home defeat really hope I,m wrong but cant see us stopping SU especially after watching the Burnley game Sorry to sound like an old GROUCH but I am really finding it difficult to get excited about PNE with the way we are playing at the moment and the ability of some of the team especially our strikers after only 9 games we have already had the same amount of draws as the whole 20-21 season when we finished 13th with 61 points cant see us getting anywhere near that point total

Agree oldun...maybe it's age..as a season card holder I wonder what I'm doing watching all these unexciting/boring home games
Lancashire v Kent fills me with more anticipation, tomorrow.
We need a Pebblepint or few.

Let’s upset the Applecart, we did it when they needed a win at theirs to secure a home tie v Man U Always got the measure of this South Yorkshire team …. Remember Alex Sabella making an appearance at Deepdale, unknown quantities foreign players in them days …..
On a side note, My Dad in Heaven, the Plastic fan who I defected from in football allegiance only, came home one day after a game at Deadwood v Sheff U …. he was a farmer with no info on the so called stars of the day. I sat and had tea with him and he said he had met a top guy ‘some Mr Bean’ shared a few whiskies together and had a card to call him on the return fixture ….. I did on the behalf of Dad, it was Sean Bean the Actor, Dad and his cronies went over and had the most amazing day in his box ……. Just wish I had kept the number 🤣🤣🤣
Don’t forget last season when Ched came on they treat him like a hero ……
Win for me

Nothing much wrong for me with the way we are playing (I was away for the Brummie game). The defending is as good as anything since the BD era and the away performances have generally been very good indeed.
Issue for me is the set up..thought there were some cobbler comments on this forum in another thread some time ago about us not being a defensive side but just good at defending. Yes we are good at defending, the covering is first class. If one attacker gets past a man there's always someone else there. Noticeable that the only two goals we have conceded have both come from headers when Hughes has been missing..his aerial ability doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
However we are very defensively set up.
When you have two defensive midfielders, one of whom, Whiteman, is very good at not losing possession because he plays so many square balls, and two wbs who are not wbs and have to drop back to cover the flanks, and also swap and change the no 10 (and whether it's Browne ot DJ or anyone else in this role it's not been played well) it's inevitable that: - you are not going to break quickly - you are not going to get many players in the opposition box giving the opposition all the time in the world to get back behind the ball.
Hence whilst I find it tactically interesting ..and enjoy watching it...I'm not entirely surprised that others are finding it tedious.
Clearly the manager is happy with the system and not conceding...appears more stubborn than AN in this regard. So what's the answer: - 3 4 3 - just one defensive midfielder in front of the back 3. - start playing to Riis's strengths. He has a touch like a dog and for a big guy is weak in the air...he is not a hold up player. If he's played in with the ball on the deck, esp running into the box, he will score. He's never going to score 30 yards out with his back to goal. At least one midfielder has to push up more and quicker to create room and take defenders away.
Be prepared to take some risks...3 points for a win , 1 for a draw.
It won't happen tomorrow though...I can see both sides cancelling each other out with the same formation.
But they are not much better than us and certainly beatable.

I’m enjoying this season despite the lack of goals, been some good performances overall. If we had taken 3 points off Rotherham, Wigan and Hull as we should have-we would be top 4.. defensively we have been brilliant and for me it’s part of the game, bigger attendances, better atmosphere, better transfer window-it all feels like we are going in the right direction.. (obviously room for more improvement)
Saying all that my expectations always start with staying up, finishing above Blackpool, then Rovers and then Burnley, then I look at top half, top 10 and dream of the play offs, which is the best our budget could hope for!!
Biggest annoyance for me is the parking getting more difficult 🙄

A bit of quality for their goal, we’ve dominated the first half but nothing to show for it as per usual. Could, should be 2 to them. We need to put someone else on corner duty

HT 0-1
Dont think we deserve to be trailing. Much more entertaining than the Burnley game. Alvero showing why he's not really ready to be starting games.
Still in this and no reason we cant get at least a point from it.
