Preston North End V Middlesbrough Deepdale Stadium Saturday 7th May 2022 KO 12.30pm V Another season comes to an end and it’s another mid table finish for North End. The fanbase will have differing views on that. I see it as relative success. We’re in a good league with lots of local derbies and we are as likely to beat Bournemouth as Reading at home such is the unpredictability of the championship. Our attendances indicate we should be scrapping with relegation more years than not but we will finish nearly 30 points from the drop zone. The club needs to sit down over the summer and work out how we are going to bank 10 more points with a refreshed squad but without the likes of Iversen, VDB and Archer. It’s a challenge for sure and a couple of new signings will accelerate encouraging season ticket sales. So plenty to look forward to and Luton have shown it’s possible.
On to the game, the stakes for Boro are high. Only a win will do and yet may not be enough to join the lottery of the play offs to win the most lucrative prize in league football. Our visitors are in decent if not sparkling form - 8 points from 5 games - goal scoring seems something of a weakness compared to their rivals in the top 6 so it’s a game we should look to win. Manager Chris Wilder has had a promising first season at Boro winning 50% of his games in charge and he could nudge his former club out of the top 6 by 3pm Saturday. I remember Chris as a quick copper haired right back with the blades in 1986 when I first went to uni. He played there in three different divisions including the first division until 1992. I was speaking to Ian Bryson in the boozer after the legends game and he hopes to catch up with him at the weekend. There will surely be a large away contingent cheering Boro on while also listening to the commentary of Sheffield United V Fulham from Bramhall Lane. Sure to be nerve shredding stuff for them.
The home side pretty much picks itself with everyone fit but with Hughes out there’s a big shout to see Hunts play on last game for the Lilywhites. He never lets us down when called upon such is his preparation. Would be great to see even if it’s just from the bench Grezza style. Personally I hope to see DJ at LWB to accommodate McCann in midfield. I’m a big fan of McCann and would like to see him settled in a midfield role. It will be interesting to see if Mikey gets more minutes after impressing the manager at Barnsley - he describes him as a special talent. Could he replace Archer for the last game? Maybe too soon and more likely he’ll join the game from the bench. Anyway I’m looking forward to the game. The best we can hope for is a top half finish above the lashers but it’s sure to be an interesting summer at Deepdale with eyes firmly on outgoing players as well as new signings.
Enjoy the summer break.

Sadly this will be the only home game this season i will miss, little lad has an academy game for Burnley!! No idea why the games have been moved to a morning kick off!! Weirdly I feel an element of guilt not being there to say farewell to the loan lads, Hunts and Barky and really hope it’s a good turn out despite having nothing to play for! I thought it was pretty poor that so many Barnsley fans left before the end-even though they finished bottom! I’d love to see us win this and finish above Bleakpoo ending a very up and down season on some sort of a high..
Overall too many draws have meant a drab season!

Boro have sold out their allocation so should be a good atmosphere. They'll be on the front foot for the win

I hope we beat them because I don't want us to lose, and to enable Sheffield United take the last play-off place. Hope McCann plays. Elsewhere will be hoping Sutton beat Harrogate and Walsall beat Swindon.

Cheers Phantom Winger, last one of the season Never liked Middlesboro since our visit way back in the 80s to Ayersome Park when Ronnie Hildersley’s rocket won the 3rd round FA Cup game they gave us dogs abuse outside after the game hurling anything they could get they hands on as ammunition, even saw a car door flying past 😰😰 An enjoyable 3 points with Hunts doing a Grezza after coming on with 10 minutes to go

Had to run and hide in a grocers shop

I'm hoping we put out our strongest available team for this one. I want to end the season on a high and don't want supporters leaving before the final while and then stay for the lap of thanks plus the young lads coming out.
Should have been done at half time and not at the end but that's how it is.

Just on bus to Hoppers to pick up a coach (going to rugby final today) and saw the Middlesbrough fan coaches being police chaperoned. All 3 of them!

There will be more than that, they’ve sold out the away end apparently. Won’t be any of the youth in squad bar possibly O’Neil today, most are in the youth squad that are currently playing.

Great performance and a flavour of things to come. Riis is our top scorer in the championship years - 16 - Cressy also got 16.

Good result but still a bottom half finish. Add to that, we lost our benefactor, and had yet another managerial change and it has to go down as a disappointing season. At least we stayed up.

No negativity today Robert. Boro fan told me that was the best performance of any side against them all season. Said we were different class. We look so much better with AM, firstly in the side but more importantly in the middle of midfield. Browne had his best game for a long time, as did Lindsay. Need to do everything to keep our loan players

What a great day, I thought DJ at lwb last week only looked good due to Barnsley being poor but it worked again today. Riis and Archer actually looked like a pair today, McCann again made a difference. Worrying that the loan players wrapped up the POTS awards but they deserved it. Good amount of fans stayed afterwards for the awards and lap.

Very good occasion. The performance reminded me of the first one after Westley was sacked..free flowing from back to front. Took a Middlesborough fan with me. He thought they were dreadful today (he'd been up to see them V Stoke last week) and confirmed they are desperate to sign a couple of keepers (DI was mentioned again). Lovely send off for the CC.

On the game the loans will be a huge miss. That said positive green shoots. We have a very decent midfield. Browne, DJ, Whiteman, McCann and Potts will go a long way in terms of keeping us in the division. Riis - nobody has scored more championship goals for us. Combinations at the back and SW fans rave about storey so let’s see. We’ll need a keeper though.
