At the risk of sounding like a pessimist, when we look at this through cold hard facts, and you see the squad Rovers have built, it is far superior to ours. Their forward line of Gallagher, Brereton and Armstrong cost them a cool £15 million combined. Add to that, some super players like Bradley Johnson, Lewis Holtby - came on 'frees', but as we know, the wages will be high. Some excellent business in the loan department too - Barry Douglas and Harvey Elliott won't have come cheap. Add to that some good home grown talent and the level of investment that Tony Mowbray has received should mean that Rovers are a top 6 team in my view.
At the start of the season, I said to a few Rovers fans I know that they should finish 20 points above us this season and they will need to get promoted this season as this is their third full year back in the Championship, which means FFP will kick in. With losses of around £30 million in the last 2 years, and more heavy investment, they are at risk. Calculating owners will take financial risks, and they did this successfully in League 1 (keep the highly paid and hope you go up!). That said, if they don't go up, with £160 million debt and losing around £15-£20 million every season, things will have to change. I admire the Venky's for what they are trying to do - especially with all the vitriol they received initially. Some of this was racism - I was told by more than one Rovers fan they would never go again while a pXXi was in charge (wrong country but there we are and yes I did challenge this) and some of it was the despair of a group of owners who didn't know relegation from the Prem was even a thing.
So what am I saying? We are well and truly the underdog - and being 3 points behind Rovers at this stage despite all the contract issues etc would suggest to me that if one of these two managers should be under pressure if they lose on Friday, it should not be Alex Neil.

Sorry mooney but its the same old talk about rovers. Debt debt debt its going to catch up with them and it really isn't doing. They still out spend pne with similar gates , they still pay big wages and still they sit comfy in the champ despite many keep saying they can't go on like this. When will their slender thread break ? Fwiw , I don't think they are top 6 material they're just alot better than us because for 12 months, apart from a few good results, we are relegation fodder, only difference is we have pocked up points whilst looking poor.

Great post Mooney and I fully agree that Rovers should be doing far better than what they are doing given the backing Mowbray has had and the quality within that squad. If I was a Rovers fan I’d be underwhelmed to say the least and I know a couple that are naffed off. FWIW I sincerely hope their overspending catches up to them and they suffer but that’s not our issue really. However the above doesn’t excuse AN from criticism regarding our poor performances and his personal poor performance over the last 12 months. When you add up what has been spent on players during AN’s reign and wage increases new contracts for playing staff etc... then he too has been backed pretty substantially by PNE standards. Yes we have have sold key players but we are operating at a loss, the owner would be mad to throw all profit from any player sales back to strengthen the squad. Although we may have cost less to assemble than the Rovers side I think we have as much quality in our squad, this has been proven this season in games against some of the leagues better sides. It’s up to the manager to bring some kind of consistency and find solutions when things are not going to plan. If he fails to do so, we have to watch rubbish and lose matches then fully expect AN to feel the heat. Any other club in the country and AN would have been potted long before now. He’s lucky to be at such a good club. 🤷♂️

They do, but let’s just keep it to facts and not forget how they have got away with it for so long. 1) Relegation reset their FFP as different rules in League 1 2) This year end they will exceed FFP rules, let us see what happens then. 3) Their spending will have to stop or they will get in trouble with the EFL

I can accept defeats like last Saturday as I could see what we were trying to achieve and could have won the game. What we saw V Rovers was a disgraceful capitulation.
Lots of activity in and out this window so let’s hope for better but if we continue to lose half our games come the end of the season it will be bottom 8 not top 8 we’re looking at.
I wouldn’t want the next squad picked by the current recruitment team.

ProudPreston29 You are obviously a moderator on here and as such have more say than me but I don’t particularly want Rovers fans coming on here gloating after a win. We lose and they’ll be all over here, we win and they won’t be seen or heard. Why have you done that?

Anyway, this should have been 1 of 2 games that should have been , fo me, the biggest games of the season. As it is, I cant get any more excited for this one than the wycombe game.... 3-1
