I personally think we should be measuring cases of hospitalisation rather than positive cases.. and advising those at risk to isolate.

I don't think anybody is denying that the balance is a difficult task px6 but I would maintain that measures to combat other forms of demand on the NHS and other public services are perfectly valid....generally we accept limited measures and indifferent intervention results. I am not saying it's right but that's the way it is. Wouldst the same amount of effort and resources put into other preventative interventions.
If people complain this government has only itself (and advisors)to blame for - starting out with the nonsense of achieving herd immunity - failing to follow up, indeed dropping, early tracking measures - failing to meet testing targets - saying the care/nursing homes would not be affected - releasing NHS patients into care homes - farcical PPE ordering and supply - failing to enforce lockdown rules (Cummings) - sending out confusing messages..go to work/stay at home - failing to enforce rules in general
It has been a saga of incompetence. Now as far as football and other cultural/sporting events are concenrned people are left not knowing if they are coming or going. Policy is being made on the hoof. It is not for the public to come up with better ways of doing things...that is what governments are elected for.

I personally think we should be measuring cases of hospitalisation rather than positive cases.. and advising those at risk to isolate. Danger with this approach is that the virus spreads exponentially and we would then it would have a greater foothold. For me... I’m with Daws here. Utterly incompetent and lying PM and Health Sec. Now isn’t the time for retribution but the Enquiry that will follow will show Johnson and the rest of his fool’s interview a very, very dim light.

France, Spain and Italy had very tough lockdowns in France you needed a form to go out, they ended lockdown before us and now have 11,000 new infections on one day this week, lockdown's do not work. I do my Supermarket shop in Morrison's in Cleveleys they no longer count you in and out it's back to normal as far as that is concerned, from March to July you didn't need a gimp mask now you do so I trog through the supermarket with one on. On the way in the same building on the same floor is the resteraunt no need for masks in there it is ludicrous. We were told wear a mask to keep infections down and they are now going up, do masks work well, no. Looks like the Swedish way worked but the likes of Piers Organ etc forced the issue. According to that dip rubbish Ferguson we may have to take tougher measures this is the man whose model stated 500,000 would peg it in Britain alone.
Thomas Dalby called it right

Thomas Dalby called it right Can’t beat a good 80s reference. I bizarrely met TD in a Holiday Inn in Glasgow back in 1980s... odd. Lockdown. We didn’t really have one. What we had wasn’t called this by BJ for at least 4 weeks and it wasn’t lockdown. It was restrictions. As we both know, Johnson is a libertarian and was reticent to use this language. Unlocking was the hard part... freeing people and unfortunately the ‘Happy Monday’ Daily Fail etc stuff led people into a false sense of security. This was backed up by the Eat out to Help out scheme. At the time I admit I thought was a good idea, but everyone was rammed Monday to Weds and quiet at weekend. I am guessing but think this has played a part. No easy solution now whatsoever but the public need one message above all else. Be careful for flips sake

The reaction to Coronavirus here in Thailand has been strong, strict and lengthy, measures taken since March include
Closure of the borders - still in place Curfew 9pm to 5am - removed in June Alcohol ban - removed in June Closure of all bars, restaurants, night clubs etc - removed August (restaurants reopened in July with strict rules) Masks to be worn at all times in public - still in place Body temperature taken when entering shopping malls, stores etc - still in place Check in by app when entering shopping malls, stores etc - still in place
The list goes on but I wont bore you
The upshot being 1 domestic case of coronavirus in over 3 months. The downside is Thailands economy is in an appalling mess. Here on Samui an island reliant on tourism, the economy harubbish rock bottom. The main holiday town of Chaweng has been decimated, 99% of businesses have gone - many never to reopen. The population of Samui as shrunk by 60% as not only are there no tourists but many Thais who came to Samui to work have returned home to the mainland without a job. The same picture is painted on other areas reliant on tourism including Bangkok.
There is a real balancing act that governments around the world have had to achieve between public safety and the economy. Thailand did a great job of public safety but at what cost, suicides over the last 3 months have risen by 22%
The modern world had never had to manage a pandemic before and figures can be quoted but what we will never know is what would have happened without measures being put in place. In my opinion deaths would have been astronomical.

Jaiyen, it depends upon your definition of "managing a Pandemic". We had Hong Kong Flu in 1968 and approximately the same number of people died here. No lockdown, no Social Media "Gloom and Doom", people just got on with their lives - those left of course - and businesses did not suffer the same financial issues, but my recollection is fairly dim. It would be interesting to research the issue.

PS. Just checked it out. There were 2 waves with the 2nd more devastating and between 30 & 40k deaths in each. 2nd wave has often been worse than the 1st but whether that is because behaviour becomes lax or the virus strengthens I would not know. I certainly cannot recall large-scale financial issues like we have now.

If they put priority into the population then the economy suffers and vice versa. Most governments put the people first and are suffering financially. Put the economy first (Trump ?) what happens to the health of the nation? As I said we will never know how many deaths there would have been had herd immunity been followed. There are many reasons why you can’t compare HK flu to Covid19 from mass global movement (5bn air passengers 2019 compared to 500m 1968) to the type of virus

There's a direct correlation between putting health first and economic well being.
The nations that have prioritised health, such as Germany, S Korea, N Zealand, have also fared better economically.

I thought that 1000 fans today was great to see and hear, I do think it’s going to be an advantage to areas that are allowed over areas that aren’t though!

I can’t see any spectators for the full season. Wouldn’t be surprised if the league was suspended again.
Spectators trials on October have been called off.

The problem was that they opened up the borders in July and August to feed the economy, something that Spain is very reliant on, unlike the UK. Yes, we are all hacked of because the whole country is now riddled with covid 19 and it seems that the 3 month lockdown was a waste of time. The problem in the UK was that people just dont follow the guide lines which is a whole different thing. Self inflicted.

who bought a season ticket then? Me. Don’t regret it. Knew the risks. Just to rile a few people... This thing of buying a season ticket to help the club is a fallacy. Most ( not all ) buy one because they know they want to go to all the games and it is cheaper that way, plus they can afford it. If you have bought a season ticket on the premise of giving money to the club then pay per game, give them more. If you have bought a season ticket this year then you knew the risks. Just consider it catching up for all those years you've being getting a cheap deal.

I don't disagree with much of this...the benefits of this are: 1) Same seat every game means that friendships and camaraderie develop over time 2) Priority for big away games 3) Priority for play off games (yes, I know...) 4) Cost To me this is the order of importance.

Yes, we are all of because the whole country is now riddled with covid 19 and it seems that the 3 month lockdown was a waste of time. The problem in the UK was that people just dont follow the guide lines which is a whole different thing. Self inflicted. There is an element of truth in this - initially I think people did follow the guidance, but as it loosened, it became more complex... when could 2 households mix? Or 3? When could 15 meet? or 6? Or 30? It became incredibly complex. Now in my world, which is a permanent state of caution, this meant I am still not really mixing or going anywhere. Since March, I have been in a shop about 6 times. I haven't been in a pub nor eaten out, mainly due to the concern around passing the virus on to others. Not everybody thinks like that, however, and many people...not only the young... are finding fatigue in staying home and safe. My dad, for instance, is over 70. He is on his own, so I get he wants to go out and do things. He tells me pubs shouldn't be open, yet will go in them. Last week he took a mate out and they went to the Lake District for the day. Had dinner out. Breaking ALL the rules - but he doesn't think he is. He isn't stupid, but rules change so regularly and are so arbitrary, it is unreal. I'm not allowed to go over and see him now, cannot sit in his garden, yet I can go into a busy pub and mix with many different households. It's a fine balancing act I appreciate, but the simpler the rules, the better.

Well I used to have a season ticket many years ago, then got married and could not afford one. I can afford one now and have had one for around the last 15 seasons. But as you get older and your birthday comes around as does Xmas, folk say to me what do you want? I genuinly do not want anything, but I ask for cash to buy the ST, that way I get what I want - no more boxes of that shower gel stuff - I get to commit to going on Deepdale and get the games cheaper + live in hope of the free ticket when promoted. I have not considered it to be an investment in the club.
I knew the risk, but I would like to think Uncle Peter will offer Ifollow access to all games + some other sweetener
