Middlesbrough V Preston North End
Wednesday 13th March
Wednesday 13th March
This is one tough assignment but with 10 to play North End realistically need to win 7 of them to be in the mix so the boys will need to be on the front foot. We all enjoyed the three points taken from Rovers over the weekend but a fluency was missing in our forward play with a few regulars missing. That said the deciding goal was indeed a fine effort.
Much to debate. With Fisher banned will Alex Neil hand new signing Rafferty his debut? Has Ryan Ledson done enough to retain his place? Ben Pearson returns to the fold and we hope for more returning from injury to give us options during this key period.
From the dugout
With four wins from six North End are one of the form teams in the division. 10 unbeaten and the least number of goals conceded during this period - only 6. Middlesbrough are in mid table form with 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses from the last six games. It's fair to say not all is rosy on Teeside. There is some disharmony with the style of play amongst the Boro fans and if it's not matched with some results over the next month or so pressure will mount for manager Tony Pulis. I have to say I expected them to be better placed.
Lies lies and damned statistics
In short the bookies has Boro as even favourites and their reasoning is this:
Calculating the total amounts of goals scored per match on home ground this season of The Championship, Middlesbrough has scored an average of 1,06 per match in the 17 matches the team has played on home ground. During this season, Middlesbrough has conceded a total of 12 goals in 17 games played on home grounds in The Championship. That means that Middlesbrough has conceded an average of 0,71 goals per match.
Looking to the amount of scored goals in away matches, Preston has scored a total of 22 goals in the 18 away matches they've played this season. In away matches, Preston has conceded an average of 1,39 goals in the 18 away games that has been played.
Middlesbrough has scored an average of 1,11 goals per match in the 35 matches that has been played in The Championship this season. During the past season, Middlesbrough conceded a total of 26 goals in the 35 matches played in the league. In average, Middlesbrough has conceded a total of 0,74 goals per match.
Preston has scored an average of 1,53 goals per match in The Championship in the 36 matches played during the season. Preston has played a total of 36 matches this season, and during those 36 matches the team has conceded a total of 49 goals giving them an average of 1,36 conceded goals per match.
Safe journey to all Lillywhites braving the long journey and cold weather to cheer on their side. We need to win but a draw would be solid for me ahead of a home tie V Birmingham on Saturday. I would be delighted with four points from this weeks football. It keeps in the hunt and a chance of 70+ points. The championship continues to intrigue and to be in the hunt in March is extraordinary after the start we had. COYW.
